Spinning and tossing their passengers around, fun rides are the main attraction for thrill-seekers at any fairground. Equipped with powerful sound systems and covered in countless light bulbs, their noise and illumination capture the attention of every passerby. But there’s another side to these loud and dazzling machines. When the crowds are gone, the rides fall silent: the music stops, the lights go out, moving parts are set in "parking position," and the cars and seats are covered. Like alien creatures waiting for a new day to begin, these sleeping rides reveal a strange beauty—one that remains hidden during the frenzy of operating hours.

I photographed Sleeping Beauties at the Munich Oktoberfest in 2014, in the quiet early morning hours as the rides were being prepared for the day.
